Social Security Login and Online Account Access

Updated February 7, 2026 ·

The Social Security Administration allows individuals to access personal Social Security information online through a secure digital account. This account provides access to earnings records, benefit estimates, and certain account management services without visiting a local office.

Online access is available only through official Social Security Administration systems and approved credential providers.

What is a Social Security online account

A Social Security online account, commonly known as my Social Security, is a secure service provided by the Social Security Administration. It allows workers, retirees, and beneficiaries to review and manage certain aspects of their Social Security record.

The account is designed to provide convenient access while maintaining strong identity protection and data security.

How to log in to a Social Security account

To access a Social Security online account, users must sign in through my Social Security using approved secure credentials. The Social Security Administration requires individuals to use either a Login.gov account or an ID.me account.

Older Social Security username and password credentials are no longer supported. Users who previously relied on those credentials must transition to one of the approved sign-in providers.

Login.gov and ID.me explained

Login.gov is a government-operated sign-in service used across multiple federal agencies. It provides a single set of credentials and includes multi-factor authentication.

ID.me is an identity verification provider approved for use with government services, including Social Security. It verifies identity through secure authentication steps.

Both credential providers meet federal security standards and are accepted for Social Security account access.

Creating a Social Security online account

Individuals who do not already have an account can create one online. Account creation requires identity verification to help prevent fraud and unauthorized access.

During setup, users may need to provide a Social Security number, a valid email address, and information used to confirm identity.

What you can do with a Social Security account

Available services depend on whether the user is currently receiving benefits. Common features include viewing earnings history, checking estimated retirement or disability benefits, managing benefit payments, updating direct deposit information, and requesting a replacement Social Security card in eligible situations.

Not all services are available to every user. Availability depends on individual circumstances.

Account security and identity protection

The Social Security Administration uses multi-factor authentication and identity verification tools to protect online accounts. Users should keep login credentials secure and monitor their account regularly.

Creating an account proactively can help reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

Common login issues

Some users experience login difficulties. Common issues include identity verification problems, credential provider access issues, or difficulty transitioning from older login methods.

The Social Security Administration provides official online help resources to assist with account access and recovery.

Avoiding scams and unofficial websites

Individuals should use only official government websites when accessing or managing Social Security accounts. The Social Security Administration does not charge fees to create or use an online account.

Users should be cautious of emails, phone calls, or websites that claim to offer Social Security services outside official channels.

Conclusion

A Social Security online account provides secure access to important personal and benefit information. By using approved credential providers and official government platforms, individuals can manage their Social Security records safely and efficiently.

For account access and information, users should rely only on official Social Security Administration resources.
